About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Operate, monitor, adjust and troubleshoot plant chemical processes for water purification
- Ensure compliance with applicable water treatment regulations, policies, procedures, and federal, provincial and City guidelines
- Act as Operator-In-Charge of a City water treatment chemical system in accordance with O. Reg. 128/04
- Identify, mitigate and manage process upsets and emergency situations involving chemical feed and control systems
- Report process upsets and emergency situations to the Process Supervisor according to plant procedures
- Assist the Process Supervisor with emergency process and environmental situations in other plant areas
- For the Process Operator-in-Training, perform some or all Process Operator duties under supervisor direction
- Operate and maintain water purification plants, remote pumping stations, reservoirs and communal well systems
Requirements
What you’ll need- Completion of 3 year community college diploma in Engineering Technology, preferably with emphasis in environmental, water treatment, chemical or biochemical technology
- Minimum of 1 year of environmental, water treatment, industrial or chemical process related work experience in an industrial, production or laboratory environment
- Process Operator must possess and maintain Ontario MOE Class 1 Drinking Water Treatment Operator Certificate; Class 2 certificate is desirable
- Process Operator-in-Training must obtain Ontario MOE Operator-in-Training Drinking Water Treatment Operator Certificate and Class 1 Drinking Water Treatment Operator Certificate within the timeframe determined by the employer
- Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, hydraulics and electrical devices
- Basic knowledge of current provincial regulations pertaining to drinking water treatment
- Basic knowledge of automated process measurement and control
- Intermediate knowledge of water treatment processes and water treatment process equipment
- Intermediate knowledge of mathematics, lab procedures and sampling techniques
- Advanced knowledge of health and safety procedures, equipment and legislation
- General knowledge of City of Ottawa Policies and Procedures, Drinking Water Services’ responsibilities, facilities and equipment
- General knowledge of computer software applications typically used in an office environment
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow instructions with minimum supervision
- Ability to record data clearly and concisely
- Ability to work with sensitive process and analytical instruments
- Ability to recognize process problems to prevent costly repairs or adverse water quality events
- Must comply with the City of Ottawa’s Respiratory Protection Policy
- Must carry out all physical requirements necessary for the position
- Must work a rotating day/night twelve (12) hour shift schedule
- Must work with and use all required/provided personal protective equipment
- English oral, reading, writing
- Successful candidate must complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements
