About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform skilled, semi-skilled, and manual maintenance work on city buildings, equipment, grounds, signs, and related facilities
  • Perform general building maintenance, repair, carpentry, construction, painting, metalwork, flooring, doors, windows, and furniture assembly
  • Troubleshoot, install, repair, and maintain electrical systems, fixtures, motors, pumps, fans, switches, timers, fuses, thermostats, generators, wires, and breakers
  • Troubleshoot and repair plumbing systems, fixtures, leaks, drains, toilets, seals, gaskets, valves, and water filters
  • Troubleshoot, service, and maintain HVAC systems, including monitoring operations, cleaning components, replacing filters, lubricating motors, and adjusting belts
  • Perform custodial maintenance, including cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, fixtures, restrooms, kitchens, windows, and trash containers
  • Support departmental and City projects by setting up equipment, moving materials, erecting signs and flags, handling debris, and delivering supplies
  • Assist with evening City Hall meetings and weekend, after-hours, and evening special events
  • Maintain building and facility security by locking and unlocking buildings and turning off unused lights and equipment
  • Inspect machinery, equipment, parts, and backflow prevention devices; report problems and make adjustments or repairs
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, machinery, tools, testing instruments, and building maintenance equipment
  • Follow safety procedures, use safety equipment, secure hazardous areas, and mark work hazards
  • Determine material needs, gather supplies, monitor inventory, and request replacements
  • Complete forms, reports, timesheets, checklists, work orders, maintenance records, and inventory records
  • Use computers, email, Internet, climate control monitors, and office equipment
  • Coordinate work with supervisors, employees, departments, contractors, vendors, and the public
  • Attend workshops and training sessions and assist other employees or departments as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six (6) months of previous experience and/or training involving general building maintenance, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, mechanical systems, general construction, and custodial maintenance
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license with a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
  • Possess a Backflow Testers license or be able to obtain certification within 12 months of employment
  • Knowledge of building maintenance trades, including construction, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, carpentry, and/or custodial maintenance
  • Knowledge of facilities services and fire safety laws, standards, and regulations
  • Knowledge of safety rules and departmental policies and procedures
  • Skill in operating building maintenance tools and equipment; ability to read gauges and testing instruments
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends on a scheduled and/or emergency basis
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and data calculations
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule-based instructions
  • Ability to operate equipment, machinery, tools, and materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects and materials weighing 20–50 pounds
  • Specialized training or certification in carpentry, HVAC, electrical, or plumbing maintenance is preferred
