About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Deliver major improvement projects, including performance overhauls and platform migrations, from investigation through rollout
Use tracing, metrics, and logs to identify and resolve recurring stability and performance issues across services and databases
Maintain and improve critical shared services such as authentication and data access control
Improve shared libraries and service templates
Deliver smaller fixes and improvements to older platform components supporting critical client workflows
Diagnose and quickly resolve production issues across the platform
Resolve urgent, high-risk issues before they become outages
Participate in the out-of-hours on-call incident rota
Collaborate with product delivery teams and the platform team
Help introduce improved architectural and operational patterns while respecting team ownership
Work closely with the Principal Engineer, another Senior Engineer, other teams, and senior stakeholders

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of production experience building and maintaining applications in TypeScript/Node.js
Experience owning services end to end, from design through production operation
Some front-end experience and willingness to contribute to front-end work
Hands-on AWS operational experience
Comfortable with infrastructure-as-code, containers, serverless, and CI/CD
Understanding of how infrastructure and services fail in production
Strong production debugging skills
Experience diagnosing performance and stability problems in live systems not personally built
Experience using observability tooling such as Datadog
Ability to work at the database level with MySQL or similar
Experience using AI coding assistants and agents, with understanding of their limitations and potential problems
Clear written communication with engineers and non-engineers
Ability to work independently on ambiguous problems
Ability to improve engineering practices through code review and knowledge sharing
No formal educational requirements required
Required to participate in the out-of-hours on-call incident rota after completing probation and settling into the team, usually around 5–6 months in
