About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, develop, and review mechanical specifications for distribution transformers
  • Develop mechanical designs for tanks, core-coil frame assemblies, cooling systems, lifting and handling features, and custom configurations
  • Perform structural strength, thermal performance, and tolerance stack-up calculations
  • Verify bushing locations, terminal clearances, and component and accessory layouts
  • Use AutoCAD, SolidEdge, and proprietary transformer design tools for design, modeling, and analysis
  • Prepare and review manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and 3D CAD models
  • Participate in product development and improvement initiatives
  • Interpret and apply IEEE, ASTM, CSA, and other industry standards
  • Participate in design reviews, customer technical discussions, and root cause analysis
  • Contribute to transformer design standardization and development of design tools, templates, and best practices
  • Support certification and testing, including pressure, rupture, vacuum, enclosure integrity, dielectric, short circuit, arc fault, and thermal performance testing
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, test, and quality teams to resolve non-conformances and implement engineering changes
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing and assembly teams, including weld specifications, material selection, and fit-up requirements
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives, prototype builds, production, and customer testing

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in design engineering of electrical distribution equipment, preferably within a transformer manufacturing environment
  • Experience designing transformers
  • Proficiency in engineering design and analysis tools, including CAD, FEA, and simulation software
  • Proficiency in productivity and ERP software
  • Proficiency in distribution transformer design and associated manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, and CSA industry standards
  • Strong understanding of transformer operating principles and sheet metal fabrication, including tank design and thermal cooling
  • Understanding of electrical wiring and related systems
  • Strong project management skills and ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa
  • Ability to work independently and in diverse teams
  • 3-week orientation required on site
