About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Study and prototype AI or robotics approaches for controlling heavy equipment in realistic simulated environments
  • Connect relevant machine learning, robotics, or embodied AI technologies to Vortex Studio
  • Set up the experimental infrastructure required to evaluate these technologies
  • Develop, adapt, or evaluate autonomous agents using demonstrations, reinforcement learning, foundation models, or other appropriate approaches
  • Use demonstrations and feedback from experienced operators collected in CM Labs’ training simulators
  • Build prototypes and quantitative evaluations to determine where simulation delivers the greatest value
  • Clearly communicate experimental results, technical limitations, and recommendations for future product or research work
  • Collaborate with software developers, simulation specialists, and subject-matter experts
  • Contribute directly to the evolution of the Vortex Studio platform

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Currently pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in machine learning, robotics, computer science, or a related technical field
  • Strong general software development skills, particularly in Python
  • Ability to independently investigate technical problems and turn research ideas into working prototypes
  • Interest in robotics, autonomous systems, embodied AI, or physics-based simulation
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in English; French is an asset
  • Experience with PyTorch or other machine learning frameworks
  • Knowledge of VLMs, VLAs, or other foundation models for embodied agents
  • Experience with imitation learning, reinforcement learning, or interactive learning from human feedback
  • Familiarity with robotics tools or simulation platforms such as ROS, MuJoCo, Isaac Sim, or Gymnasium
  • Experience with sim-to-real, robot learning, or the development of autonomous vehicles or equipment
  • Familiarity with interactive simulation systems, including control loops, state management, sensors, and real-time environments
