About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide a positive and enriching experience by engaging youth and caregivers in conversation and activities while promoting literacy and reading
  • Develop and deliver youth programming and services aligned with the library’s Young Minds Strategy
  • Provide expert reference service in person, by phone, email, and chat
  • Initiate and promote teen and children’s programs and informal engagements
  • Provide readers’ advisory using collection knowledge, publishing industry knowledge, and relevant resources
  • Train and guide staff and customers in research databases, community resources, digital resources, and reference tools
  • Evaluate the juvenile collection and lead collection management and visual merchandising activities
  • Train customers and staff on library and community resources
  • Conduct outreach and build relationships with schools and organizations serving youth and families
  • Promote early literacy skills, developmentally appropriate tools, and reading
  • Supervise volunteers and/or practicum students/interns
  • Participate in and present at local, state, and national conferences
  • Assume responsibility for location operations in the absence of a manager
  • Perform additional duties, including project leadership and serving on task forces or committees

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s of Library and Information Science Degree from ALA accredited institution of higher learning required
  • 1-3 years’ working with youth required
  • Ability to use appropriate judgment in handling information and records
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction
  • Customer-focused approach and ability to meet customer expectations
  • Ability to effectively present in a variety of formal settings
  • Ability to command attention and manage group process
  • Ability to operate library technology, including personal computer, email, Windows/Microsoft Office, and other job-related equipment and systems
  • Ability to utilize reliable transportation to promptly report to job assignment and other locations, per job requirements
  • Occasional lifting or pushing of up to 50 lbs. and frequent lifting or pushing of up to 20 lbs.
