About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and maintain features in the service that powers every BigCommerce storefront
  • Work with product managers and partner teams to shape requirements and design solutions before building and releasing them
  • Add and extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields while following schema guidelines and maintaining backward compatibility for headless storefronts and third-party integrations
  • Evolve the storefront service to support AI-driven shopping, enabling agents and shopping assistants to browse, build carts, and check out for shoppers
  • Investigate and fix production issues
  • Improve performance and reliability of the service
  • Review code from teammates and other engineering teams contributing to the storefront service
  • Develop design skills through design reviews and pairing with senior engineers
  • Take changes through production and maintain ownership of shipped work

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 3+ years of experience building backend services that run in production
  • Preferred minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience
  • Production experience with Scala or Kotlin preferred; backend engineers experienced in other languages such as Java or Go who are eager to learn Scala are encouraged to apply
  • Experience working with product managers or other stakeholders to turn requirements into a technical design and deliver it to production
  • Working knowledge of HTTP fundamentals such as caching headers, cookies and sessions, and timeouts
  • Familiarity with GraphQL APIs
  • Familiarity with service-to-service communication and caching, such as gRPC and Redis
  • Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs, such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, and Sentry
  • Familiarity with releasing changes safely through feature flags and gradual rollouts
  • Experience writing automated tests and working with CI/CD pipelines
  • Uses AI coding assistants as a regular part of development, such as Claude Code and Cursor, and reviews AI-generated code with the same care as code written by hand
  • Interest in how AI agents use APIs, such as MCP and tool calling
