About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Document, investigate, and report on press freedom violations and threats to journalists in North Africa
  • Track violations including arrests, censorship, attacks, legal harassment, and other threats across the MENA region
  • Maintain accurate and timely updates to databases of imprisoned, missing, or killed journalists
  • Build and maintain databases for local and regional media, government, and civil society contacts
  • Draft letters of appeal, statements, news alerts, reports, features, research notes, background materials, and verification summaries
  • Review relevant news websites and publications
  • Communicate with journalists and human rights activists across North Africa
  • Liaise with journalists, media workers, civil society partners, and human rights organizations for interviews, updates, and verification
  • Participate in team check-ins and meetings with CPJ program staff
  • Maintain and expand a network of regional contacts
  • Collaborate with the Advocacy and Communications department
  • Conduct direct advocacy with relevant actors
  • Research, assess, and verify Journalist Assistance requests in the MENA region
  • Submit Journalist Assistance documentation through CPJ systems
  • Assist journalists, vet cases, and coordinate with the Emergencies team
  • Create and share engaging social media content
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experience and skills commensurate with the Researcher, North Africa role
  • Ability to document, investigate, and report on press freedom violations and threats to journalists
  • Research and writing skills for editorial and advocacy outputs
  • Ability to maintain accurate, timely databases and contact networks
  • Ability to draft letters of appeal, statements, news alerts, features, research notes, background materials, and verification summaries
  • Ability to communicate and liaise with journalists, media workers, civil society partners, and human rights organizations
  • Ability to conduct research, assessment, and verification for Journalist Assistance requests
  • Ability to assist journalists, vet cases, and coordinate with teams receiving support
  • Ability to create engaging social media content
  • Arabic and English translation ability
  • Availability to work and attend meetings on US Eastern time as needed
  • Ability to work from the Middle East/North Africa region or a country in a similar time zone
