About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Report to the Senior Director, Software Engineering
- Design and develop web-based and mobile software products for Common App
- Provide technical guidance to a team of Software Developers
- Mentor Software Developers
- Implement high-quality software products meeting the needs of The Common Application community
- Define architecture and guide team implementation
- Influence frontend standards across the organization
- Provide guidance on architecture and best practices across teams
- Advise on database strategy and enterprise-level implementations
- Guide organizational CI/CD strategy
- Provide strategic guidance on cloud architecture
- Shape Agile practices across teams and guide adoption of best practices
- Provide oversight and guidance on production debugging and resolution approaches
- Evaluate and recommend solutions based on complex proofs of concept, including adoption and organizational impacts
- Guide teams on secure architecture and compliance
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must live in the United States; employees can live anywhere in the US or its territories
- Willingness and ability to travel for periodic in-person events, including semi-annual Common App retreats, department retreats, and strategic leadership sessions
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 8–10 years of successful, progressive experience in software development
- 6–8 years of experience as a people manager
- Advanced proficiency in web application development using JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern SPA frameworks such as Angular and TypeScript
- Ability to define architecture, guide team implementation, and influence frontend standards
- Expert backend and API development using REST, C#, .NET Core, ORMs, Domain-Driven Design, and Dependency Injection
- Expertise in relational and non-relational databases, including MySQL and NoSQL data stores such as AWS DynamoDB
- Advanced proficiency in CI/CD using AWS CodeBuild, AWS Lambda, CloudFormation, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and GitHub
- Advanced proficiency with AWS services including Fargate/ECS, S3, SWF, Step Functions, SQS, SES, ElastiCache, CloudFront, EC2, Serverless Lambda, VPC, and DynamoDB
- Expert in Agile development environments and software development lifecycle practices
- Expertise in code repository and branching strategies, code reviews, coding standards, deployment processes, and quality assurance practices
- Expert in debugging and troubleshooting production environments
- Expertise in evaluating and recommending solutions based on complex proofs of concept
- Advanced proficiency in OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities and secure coding practices
- AWS Solutions Architect certification is ideal
