About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead development and strategic execution of ARC Remote Maintenance System operations
  • Drive conceptual design of the ARC fusion power plant and provide expert technical guidance to cross-functional teams
  • Lead design of radiation-hardened remote handling equipment using robotics, custom hardware, and remotely operated heavy-lift equipment
  • Perform maintenance assessments of the tokamak and plant to support remote maintainability and mitigate long-term risks
  • Collaborate with tokamak engineering teams on remote maintainability and novel tokamak-joint solutions
  • Lead multidisciplinary trade studies across physics, neutronics, mechanical, thermo-fluids, electrical, maintenance, materials, manufacturing, and techno-economics
  • Lead teams and manage projects, resolve conflicts, and drive key decisions
  • Define and own R&D strategy for the ARC remote maintenance program and direct internal or external R&D campaigns
  • Research established and cutting-edge remote-handling solutions to improve performance, reduce cost, and increase reliability
  • Manage contracted work with external RHE/robotics organizations and transfer knowledge into CFS
  • Establish remote-maintenance design principles and support the growth of junior and peer engineers

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering B.S
  • At least 10 years of mechanical engineering experience in the design, fabrication, testing, operations, integration, and commissioning of complex mechanical structures
  • At least 10 years of technical experience in the design of remote handling equipment (RHE) using robotics or remotely operated precision mechanical structures
  • Proven track record of driving R&D campaigns of novel technology to increase TRL and unlock new design solutions in remote maintenance fields
  • Deep expertise with standard actuation, guidance mechanisms, sensing, and structural mechanisms
  • Expertise in structural analysis via hand calculations and finite element analysis; Ansys preferred
  • Familiarity with CAD; NX preferred
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, technical staff, executives, and others
  • Ability to communicate highly complex concepts to diverse audiences and build consensus
  • Safety conscious
  • Ability to perform typing and sit for extended periods
  • Dedication to safety around industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work occasional nights, weekends, or on-call shifts; travel expected up to 15%
  • U.S. export-control compliance required
