About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the strategy, administration, and resolution of mortgage repurchase and indemnification requests
  • Review, analyze, and rebut repurchase demands from investors, GSEs, and agencies including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, HUD, and VA
  • Review, analyze, and rebut mortgage insurance rescission demands and appeal rescission notices
  • Independently manage the repurchase demand pipeline and meet all demand appeal deadlines
  • Create and manage reports tracking loan losses, defect trends, and key metrics
  • Manage EPD requests, request payments, and determine default trends and causes
  • Manage relationships with investors, GSEs, mortgage insurers, and warehouse lenders
  • Conduct deep-dive audits of underwriting, closing, and servicing files
  • Draft formal rebuttals and negotiate settlements or alternative resolutions with investors
  • Negotiate Repurchase Alternatives and conduct Impasse calls when available
  • Partner with capital markets, legal, underwriting, sales, quality control, servicing, and finance/accounting teams on remediation, accountability, action plans, and training opportunities
  • Request repurchase funds and facilitate the return of collateral and transfer of servicing after funds are received
  • Monitor repurchase trends, identify root causes, drive corrective actions, recommend process improvements, enhance controls, and support enterprise risk management objectives

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • 8+ years of experience in mortgage banking, focusing heavily on quality control, secondary marketing, underwriting, or repurchase management
  • Deep familiarity and daily interaction with Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac guidelines, HUD/VA requirements, and TRID/RESPA compliance standards
  • Advanced ability to trace loan defects, complete a forensic loan analysis, and reverse underwrite to determine operational root causes and trends
  • Ability to read complex mortgage contracts and rep and warranty recourse agreements
  • Exceptional written and verbal skills for formal appeal letters and high-stakes financial negotiations
  • Experience with Loan Origination Systems (LOS) like Empower, investor reporting tools, and Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and leadership skills
  • Expertise in mortgage origination and servicing practices, investor guidelines, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance principles
