About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Direct the day-to-day work of a small team of coding quality specialists conducting internal hospital and physician provider auditing
- Audit and code facility inpatient, emergency room, outpatient surgery, observation, ancillary, recurring therapy, clinic, professional, and billing/coding edit resolution services
- Apply ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and Level I and II modifiers
- Work with facility-specific and state billing and coding guidelines and Medicare Administrative Contractors nationwide
- Collaborate with the Coding Department on coding audits and training
- Assign tasks, ensure deadlines are met, and mentor and train staff on quality and compliance
- Ensure compliance with departmental standards and coding practices
- Monitor team efficiency and performance expectations
- Conduct code reviews to assess quality, compliance, and risk
- Identify coding issues and recommend corrective actions
- Communicate audit findings to staff and management
- Maintain detailed records of audits and outcomes
- Audit the work of aligned team members and perform auditing and coding as an individual responsibility
- Follow AHIMA ethical coding standards, the company Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, privacy and security rules, and internal policies
Requirements
What you’ll need- 3+ years of production coding experience, including hospital and/or physician practice, inpatient coding, and prior auditing experience
- Must hold one of: Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Must be certified through AAPC (CPC or COC) or AHIMA (CCS or CCS-P)
- Understanding of healthcare billing practices and compliant claims preparation for governmental and commercial payers
- Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance
- Working knowledge and experience with EMR and billing systems
- Phone, reliable internet connection, and current CPT and ICD-10-CM coding references
- Maintain ongoing productivity and accuracy of 95% or higher
- Maintain quality score of 95% or higher
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally verbally and in writing
- Ability to coordinate, analyze, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others
- Ability to work at a computer terminal for 6–8 hours per day
- Ability to lift and move material weighing up to 20 lbs. infrequently
