About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead detailed design delivery throughout the project lifecycle, from design through handover
  • Ensure designs are delivered on time, to a high right-first-time standard, suitable for construction and asset-owner adoption
  • Provide technical leadership and manage site engineering activities safely, to required quality, on time and within budget
  • Align designer and subcontractor-designed elements
  • Further develop the groundwater strategy to enable consents and construction
  • Lead technical teams responsible for design compliance and change, temporary works, digital modelling and BIM, materials management, quality assurance and handover
  • Work with site delivery, supervision, SHE, stakeholder and commercial teams
  • Engage with the client team, Technical Advisor, NEC Supervisor and National Highways stakeholders
  • Ensure delivery complies with design information, planning constraints, technical specifications, environmental constraints and Costain Way guidance
  • Lead safety, including ensuring temporary works are correctly designed, checked and implemented
  • Promote a right-first-time quality approach
  • Manage technical design management, engineering and quality assurance staff, including TWC, lifting AP and electrical AP
  • Collaborate with project leadership to ensure safe, efficient design, delivery and handover
  • Provide planning and procurement support as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Degree level/HNC/HND qualification in Civil Engineering or relevant professional experience
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
  • Extensive experience in construction delivery, with a noteworthy proportion in a management position such as Agent/Senior Agent
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant design solutions and standards, including Specification for Highways Works
  • Knowledge of common highways construction techniques and related procedures
  • Experience working within a Principal Designer and Principal Contractor environment
  • Knowledge and experience of Temporary Works procedures
  • Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) desirable
  • Knowledge of construction contract law and NEC contract forms through formal training desirable
  • Understanding of National Highways’ handover processes desirable
  • Local authority and SRN environment design/construction experience desirable
  • Experience gaining and discharging consents from Statutory Environmental Bodies desirable
  • Experience gaining design approvals from relevant authorities and discharging planning conditions desirable
  • Knowledge of pavement design and stabilisation desirable
