About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Operate and maintain on-premise infrastructure in the Manchester colocation datacentre and disaster recovery site in Farnborough
Install, operate, and maintain IT infrastructure to ensure high availability and optimal server and storage performance
Support infrastructure upgrades while ensuring security, scalability, and compliance with industry standards
Provide technical support and ensure efficient operation of mission-critical systems
Implement and support datacentre operations and maintenance across storage, server operating systems, security, virtualisation and cloud integration, collaboration, and documentation/reporting
Rack and patch, configure, test, troubleshoot, and support server, storage, and network equipment
Perform documentation, process management, and knowledge transfer
Collaborate with in-house, outsourced, and other technical teams and system owners
Work primarily from the Manchester office, with occasional travel to other Costain locations and possible out-of-hours work

Requirements

What you’ll need

Relevant certifications such as Microsoft MCSA, AWS/Azure
Security clearance (SC) or the ability to obtain this level of clearance
Significant UK experience in IT
Understanding and experience with virtualisation technologies
Understanding and knowledge of storage technologies
Good understanding and experience of Windows server operating systems
In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS and DHCP
Ability to work with in-house and outsourced teams and system owners
Experience with hybrid cloud environments, including Active Directory (on-premise and Entra)
Secure-by-design and Zero-Trust approach to IT and cyber security
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across varied platforms and systems
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proven organisational skills
Basic networking experience, including switches, routers, and firewalls
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field (desirable)
ITIL, relevant Cyber Security qualifications, and Nutanix certification (desirable)
Desirable experience with Nutanix, Cisco Nexus/Catalyst, Cisco Meraki, routing protocols, firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, SD-WAN, IPSec VPN, Zscaler ZIA/ZPA, VEEAM, Cyber Essentials Plus, and Linux
