About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Ensure the successful and safe conduct of digital field survey, including initial site data preparation, field survey data capture and subsequent quality assurance
  • Configure, maintain and secure field survey equipment
  • Ensure the quality of field survey data and digitising from creation to completion, including appropriateness of the final product
  • Carry out field survey and other on-site data collection tasks where appropriate
  • Digitise drawn site records and manipulate and present archaeological data using CAD, GIS or other geospatial software
  • Use ESRI ArcGIS Pro for geoprocessing, querying and publishing GIS and web map services
  • Contribute to organising and conducting staff training programmes, especially survey, GIS and CAD skills development
  • Undertake equipment hiring, including purchase orders and communications with external hire companies
  • Participate in organising and implementing instrument allocation to staff and projects
  • Contribute to large and complex work through project running and quality assurance
  • Participate in fieldwork programming
  • Build effective relations with fieldwork and geomatics teams, support and administrative staff, and clients
  • Implement relevant organisational policies and observe fire, health and safety and safe-working requirements

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in Archaeology or a relevant subject
  • Sufficient experience as a field archaeologist on evaluations, watching briefs and excavations
  • Considerable understanding of the principles of archaeological survey
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of ESRI software packages, particularly proficiency in ArcGIS Pro
  • Methodological approach to working and meeting deadlines
  • Considerable experience of archaeological field survey using GNSS and Total Stations instruments, preferably Leica, and handling and manipulating field survey data
  • Ability to provide clear descriptions of observations and interpretations from archaeological survey work
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and Access
  • Commitment to professional standards of archaeology
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to undertake away work and occasional overnight stays
  • Applicants must already have the legal right to live and work in the UK as defined by UK Visas and Immigration
  • Desirable: experience providing teaching, training or mentoring
  • Desirable: experience contributing to project reports, publications, research projects or outreach projects
  • Desirable: experience of photography and photogrammetry
  • Desirable: experience of archaeological building and earthwork survey
  • Desirable: ability to configure and troubleshoot Leica GNSS and Total Station instruments
  • Desirable: experience with remote data capture systems, including terrestrial and airborne solutions
  • Desirable: experience with JavaScript, Python, LISP and ModelBuilder
  • Desirable: experience manipulating digitised and field survey data during post-excavation work
  • Desirable: familiarity with Adobe Illustrator or other drawing packages
  • Desirable: CSCS card
