About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Ensure the successful and safe conduct of digital field survey, including initial site data preparation, field survey data capture and quality assurance
  • Configure, maintain and secure field survey equipment
  • Ensure the quality of field survey data and digitising from creation to completion
  • Carry out field survey and other on-site data collection tasks where appropriate
  • Digitise drawn site records and manipulate and present archaeological data using CAD, GIS or other geospatial software
  • Use ESRI software, particularly ArcGIS Pro, for geoprocessing, querying and publishing GIS and web map services
  • Contribute to staff training programmes, developing survey, GIS and CAD skills
  • Undertake equipment hiring, purchase orders and communications with external hire companies
  • Organise and implement instrument allocation to staff and projects
  • Contribute to large and complex projects and their quality assurance
  • Build effective relationships with fieldwork, geomatics, support, administrative staff and clients
  • Implement organisational policies and comply with fire, health and safety and risk-assessment requirements

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in Archaeology or a relevant subject
  • Sufficient experience as a field archaeologist on evaluations, watching briefs and excavations
  • Considerable understanding of archaeological survey principles
  • Extensive knowledge of ESRI software packages, particularly proficiency in ArcGIS Pro
  • Experience of archaeological field survey using GNSS and Total Stations instruments, preferably Leica
  • Experience handling and manipulating field survey data
  • Clear descriptions of observations and interpretations from archaeological survey work
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Access
  • Commitment to professional standards of archaeology
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to undertake away work and occasional overnight stays
  • Sufficient experience providing teaching, training or mentoring
  • Sufficient experience contributing to project reports, publications, research projects or outreach projects
  • Sufficient experience of photography and photogrammetry
  • Sufficient experience of archaeological building and earthwork survey
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot Leica GNSS and Total Station instruments
  • Experience with remote data capture systems, including terrestrial and airborne solutions
  • Experience with JavaScript, Python, LISP and ModelBuilder
  • Experience manipulating digitised and field survey data during post-excavation work
  • Familiarity with drawing packages such as Adobe Illustrator
  • CSCS card
