About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Set architectural direction for cross-platform API components including threading, file I/O, hashing, work queues, and memory management
  • Lead architecture and delivery of the centralized on-sensor ML inference runtime
  • Design the stable C API, out-of-process execution and sandboxing model, and backend selection/versioning policy
  • Decide what is implemented once versus per platform and what runs in-process versus out-of-process
  • Drive adoption of platform APIs through linting, automated code review, and usage guidance
  • Participate in design and code reviews
  • Hire, coach, and grow engineers through feedback and career investment
  • Lead recruitment from initial contact through onboarding
  • Build team cohesion and resolve interpersonal friction
  • Support resourcing decisions, career development, and difficult conversations
  • Own project resourcing, workload, quality, support escalations, and delivery priorities
  • Improve end-to-end testing and validation for correctness- and compatibility-critical components
  • Build tooling to validate against the platform without building the full sensor
  • Create a data-driven roadmap using performance telemetry and defect trends
  • Communicate investment needs and progress to senior leadership
  • Collaborate with Windows, Linux, and macOS engineering teams, platform infrastructure, product, and program management
  • Represent the team in cross-functional discussions and provide technical recommendations

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Proven experience managing software engineering teams, built on a strong foundation as a software developer
  • Deep expertise in C and/or C++ in both user-mode and kernel-mode environments
  • Strong grounding in API and interface design, including interface clarity, ABI stability, backward compatibility, and managing downstream impact of breaking changes
  • Cross-platform experience across Windows, Linux, and macOS
  • Familiarity with out-of-process architecture patterns, sandboxed service isolation, IPC, and process-boundary performance tradeoffs
  • Experience owning production software at scale
  • Strong design and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated success mentoring, coaching, and developing engineers
  • Experience leading distributed teams
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Clear, direct communication from individual contributors to executive leadership
  • Intellectual curiosity and commitment to deeply understanding systems
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally for team offsites and in-person meetings
  • Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes
  • Bonus: endpoint security, EDR, kernel-level software, or sensor platform engineering experience
  • Bonus: cross-platform API layers in large C/C++ codebases
  • Bonus: on-device ML inference infrastructure, including ML models and SLMs on resource-constrained endpoints
  • Bonus: hardware-accelerated inference across GPU, NPU, and Apple Neural Engine
  • Bonus: ONNX Runtime, OpenVINO, or Core ML
  • Bonus: out-of-process inference pipelines and low-latency IPC
  • Bonus: fleet-scale model lifecycle management
  • Bonus: cross-language integration surfaces such as C APIs consumed from Rust, Swift, and C++
  • Bonus: API governance tooling, lint rules, automated policy checks, and feedback loops
  • Bonus: leading teams through significant growth or expanding scope
  • Bonus: reliability at massive fleet scale
