About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform technical review of construction documents for residential and multi-family construction.
  • Review drawings, calculations, soils reports, and other documents for compliance with California Building Standards Codes and Reference Standards.
  • Use engineering judgment to assess design adequacy for life-safety and other code requirements.
  • Read and interpret maps, construction diagrams, electronic plans, and project specifications.
  • Understand design discipline coordination and plan development.
  • Write effective plan check correction notices.
  • Suggest alternate forms of compliance with codes and ordinances.
  • Prepare and present oral and written reports.
  • Develop understanding of electronic plan check submittals, review processes, software systems, and management tools.
  • Maintain working relationships with government agencies, civic organizations, architects, contractors, engineers, and the public.
  • Work toward obtaining and maintaining additional ICC Certifications.
  • Work under the general direction of the supervisor.
  • Visit client locations, job sites, or other business-related locations as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 3+ years reviewing plans for conformance to the California Building Standards Codes and Referenced Standards.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of certification as an Engineer-in Training (EIT) is required.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering as applied to building design and construction.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing Plans Examiner Certification, or additional applicable ICC Certifications, or CASp Certification, as required for this role.
  • Competency in computer systems such as Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam & Bluebeam Studios, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, construction diagrams, electronic plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Must be able to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license when assigned to positions requiring business-related driving.
  • Candidates must live locally or within the State of CA.
