About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform technical review of construction documents for residential and multi-family construction
  • Review drawings, calculations, soils reports, and other documents for conformance with California Building Standards Codes and Reference Standards
  • Use engineering judgment to assess design adequacy for life-safety and other code requirements
  • Read and interpret maps, construction diagrams, electronic plans, and project specifications
  • Evaluate projects for compliance with codes, ordinances, and reference standards
  • Coordinate design disciplines and develop effective plan check correction notices
  • Suggest alternate forms of compliance with codes and ordinances
  • Prepare and present effective oral and written reports
  • Develop working knowledge of electronic plan check submittals, review processes, software systems, and management tools
  • Maintain working relationships with government agencies, civic organizations, architects, contractors, engineers, and the public
  • Work toward obtaining and maintaining additional ICC Certifications
  • Work under the general direction of a supervisor
  • Visit client locations, job sites, or other business-related locations as required
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 3+ years reviewing plans for conformance to the California Building Standards Codes and Referenced Standards
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Possession of certification as an Engineer-in Training (EIT) is required
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of engineering as applied to building design and construction
  • International Code Council (ICC) Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing Plans Examiner Certification, or additional applicable ICC Certifications, or CASp Certification, as required for this role
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam & Bluebeam Studios, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other computer systems
  • Ability to assume responsibility, interface and communicate effectively with internal and external customers
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations, be flexible, and overcome obstacles to complete tasks
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Valid driver's license for positions requiring business-related driving
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines and multiple projects
  • Ability to walk and bend; may require lifting up to 35 pounds
