About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work directly with the Port Captain and Vessel Captain aboard Curtin's ASD ship-assist and escort tugs
  • Apply Curtin's Innovation, Integrity, and Efficiency values and maintain the Curtin Standard onboard
  • Assist the Captain and Harbor/State Pilots with safe docking, undocking, and escort of deep-draft vessels
  • Support 24/7 ship-assist and escort operations on a shift-based schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Operate in the San Pedro Bay Port Complex, including the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
  • Progress from introductory ASD/Z-drive tractor-tug maneuvering under supervision to skilled operation in current and close-quarters ship traffic
  • Perform direct and indirect escort towing and bow/stern ship-assist work
  • Complete forms, reports, and Vessel Management System tasks; progress to mastery and train others
  • Maintain inventories and official logbook records
  • Assist with internal and external compliance audits
  • Assign projects to crew, hold crew accountable, coach crew members, and provide performance feedback
  • Create and carry out vessel maintenance work plans with the Captain/Chief Mate
  • Coordinate job/voyage planning with pilots, terminal operators, and agents
  • Assist with drydocking management and vessel commissioning

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • TWIC Card
  • Mate of Towing Vessels, Near Coastal OR 500 GRT Mate, Near Coastal with TOAR
  • CG Medical Certificate with no nighttime restrictions
  • Pass physical and drug test
  • MROP FCC License
  • Radar Unlimited
  • STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft
  • Ability to think clearly during stressful situations or emergencies
  • Ability to take direction and respect the chain of command
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-traffic harbor environment with frequent close-quarters maneuvering
  • Ability to traverse uneven ground and walk gangways at various heights
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, climb high steps/ladders, and lift 100 pounds safely
  • Physical dexterity and strength to handle lines, make up tows and escort bridles, operate deck machinery, and work on poorly accessible equipment
  • Ability to work below decks in darkness and confined spaces
  • Ability to perform emergency duties and use emergency equipment onboard the vessel
  • Must be able to swim
  • STCW OICNW 500 Ton, Near Coastal preferred
  • Master of Towing Vessels, Near Coastal preferred
  • Prior ship-assist/escort experience in the Ports of Los Angeles & Long Beach or a comparable high-traffic deep-draft harbor strongly preferred
  • General understanding of ship-assist operating standards, radio etiquette, lines/rigging, cordage care, painting schemes, and machinery limitations
  • ASD/Z-drive tractor-tug handling
  • Direct and indirect escort towing methods and bow/stern ship-assist work
  • Ability to complete forms and reports in the Vessel Management System
  • Basic engine room knowledge and mechanical repair abilities
  • Crew management skills
  • Job/voyage planning, weather observation/prediction, and San Pedro Bay traffic awareness
  • Proficiency operating the Vessel Management System
  • Ability to maintain inventories and complete thorough logbook records
  • Ability to assist with compliance audits, drydocking management, and vessel commissioning
