Key responsibilities & impact

Design and develop scalable backend services and APIs using Node.js and Java within a microservices architecture
Integrate GraphQL APIs, Kafka messaging systems, and CMS/Contentful platforms
Build and maintain Backend for Frontend patterns supporting Android, iOS, and Web applications
Develop database solutions across multiple database types and support database migration efforts
Deploy and operate services on AWS using CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions and Snyk
Monitor services using New Relic
Own the full development lifecycle from requirements through production
Use AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity
Write comprehensive test cases
Collaborate with cross-functional teams using Jira
Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices
Challenge existing processes and propose innovative solutions to improve system performance, scalability, and maintainability
Contribute to Care Paths, Aetna Health’s personalized healthcare experience for members

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of professional software development experience
5+ years of Node.js server-side development experience
3+ years of Java development experience
Strong experience with microservices architecture, Kafka messaging systems, GraphQL APIs, CMS platforms such as Contentful, and SQL/NoSQL databases
Experience with database migration strategies
Experience building Backend for Frontend (BFF) architectures for Android, iOS, and Web applications
Proficiency with AWS cloud services
Experience with GitHub Actions for CI/CD automation
Experience with Snyk or similar security scanning tools
Experience with New Relic or similar observability/monitoring tools
Ability to write test cases and own end-to-end delivery from development to production
Experience with Jira for agile project management
Demonstrated mentoring and leadership skills
Proactive, inquisitive approach to problem-solving
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent work experience
Alternatively, High School Diploma/GED plus 4 years of relevant software development experience
Preferred: experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Cursor
Preferred: experience with Docker, Kubernetes, API security, authentication mechanisms, distributed tracing, observability frameworks, Agile/Scrum, and healthcare or member-facing digital products
