About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own, design, and maintain canonical data models, schemas, and business glossaries
- Ensure semantic consistency across project streams and prevent data fragmentation
- Establish firm-wide engineering standards for pipeline frameworks, code quality, automated testing, environment strategies, and CI/CD automation
- Direct and align senior data engineers embedded in project squads
- Ensure adoption of shared components, architecture principles, and engineering patterns
- Conduct hands-on technical reviews of vendor codebases
- Evaluate engineering approaches and audit delivered data artifacts before production release
- Review and assure engineering content in Steering Committee packs
- Independently audit and validate vendor claims regarding task completion and delivery velocity
- Test whether engineering estimates and Change Requests are technically justified
- Conduct root-cause analysis of project delays related to code quality or environment issues
- Bridge conceptual data structures and production-grade engineering across retail banking modernizations, mobile banking backends, and real-time digital customer journeys
- Present technical decisions and engineering vision to C-level stakeholders
- Build trust and articulate the business rationale behind technical decisions
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of hands-on data engineering and modelling experience
- 4+ years leading engineering standards or platform teams in consultancies or major banks
- Solid background modelling and engineering enterprise data solutions within Retail Banking (RBG) environments
- Direct experience building or modelling high-throughput, real-time data backends for consumer-facing mobile banking apps and digital customer journeys
- Deep expertise in conceptual, logical, and physical data modelling
- Experience with ERD, Data Vault 2.0, Dimensional/Kimball, and JSON/Avro
- Experience across batch and real-time streaming topologies
- World-class verbal, written, and visual communication capabilities
- Ability to translate complex engineering metrics into clear, executive-ready insights
- Proven ability to present to technical and business executives, including CTO and Head of Engineering
- Ability to defend engineering standards under scrutiny and manage vendor friction constructively
- Advanced mastery of SQL, Python, PySpark/Databricks, Snowflake/BigQuery, Kafka/Event Hubs, dbt, and cloud data platforms such as AWS/Azure
- Direct experience leading data engineering or modelling initiatives for major banks in the UAE or GCC region is an advantage
