About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, build and ship projects for Deputy's AI Scheduling team
- Own meaningful projects from technical design through ongoing operation
- Ship small, well-tested increments, improve code and raise risks early
- Collaborate with Product, Design and Data to turn customer problems into measurable product improvements
- Develop deep knowledge of the Scheduling product and architecture
- Balance delivery speed with performance, reliability, security, maintainability and enterprise scalability
- Use design reviews, incident learnings and proofs of concept to support technical decisions
- Set a high standard in code reviews and mentor engineers
- Use AI-assisted and agentic development tools in real work
- Establish practices for reviewing, testing, monitoring and documenting machine-generated code
- Plan evaluation, guardrails, cost, latency and graceful failure for customer-facing AI features
Requirements
What you’ll need- 4+ years of experience as a backend software engineer, including taking features from design through to production
- Experience running customer-facing software and making trade-offs between delivery speed, reliability and long-term maintainability
- Experience designing APIs (REST or RPC) and building services with good monitoring and observability
- Experience leading or shaping technical designs and explaining engineering decisions to technical and non-technical people
- Experience working with Product and Design on ambiguous problems and finding practical ways to move them forward
- Current use of AI coding tools and critical review of their output
- Helpful: experience building and operating distributed, cloud-native or multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale
- Helpful: experience designing for resilience across services, event-driven systems and large relational or NoSQL data stores
- Helpful: experience shipping LLM-backed or agentic features in production
- Helpful: experience with workforce management, scheduling or another operationally complex product
- Helpful: PHP or Go in production, plus protobuf, gRPC, MySQL, Redis, DynamoDB, SQS and Elasticsearch
- Ability to work with technologies including PHP, Go, Python and AWS
