About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Ensure websites work correctly in DuckDuckGo browsers across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android
  • Reverse-engineer how sites detect DuckDuckGo privacy protections and build countermeasures
  • Shim browser APIs so sites work across different browser engines and system webviews
  • Build LLM agent pipelines to automatically reproduce and triage reported site breakage
  • Own the web compatibility side of the triage process
  • Debug complex issues in code the team does not control
  • Distinguish site bugs, browser bugs, and privacy-protection-induced breakage
  • Lead incident response when major sites break
  • Ship durable fixes across every platform
  • Work on projects that prevent user churn and retain DuckDuckGo users

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years of experience building and debugging complex web applications with vanilla JavaScript
  • Detailed knowledge of web standards, web components, and browser APIs
  • Additional experience with Swift, Kotlin, C#, C++, or Python is a bonus
  • Advanced ability to reverse-engineer obfuscated third-party code and reduce issues to minimal test cases
  • Passion for hunting elusive bugs and tracing them to their root cause
  • Interest in automating repetitive work and building agentic tooling
  • Experience triaging issues, leading incident response, and communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience shipping code beyond the web, such as native or desktop clients
  • Ability to lead complex, ambiguous projects with little to no oversight
  • Must attend meetings on camera via video conferencing
  • Must pass a background check as a condition of joining
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country of residence; DuckDuckGo does not sponsor or assist with individual immigration needs
