About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide environmental construction and biological resource monitoring services on current construction projects
- Work with construction crews and project managers to document compliance with environmental permits
- Complete construction surveys and focused resource surveys
- Oversee installation and maintenance of environmental exclusion fencing, wildlife fencing, and material and waste management
- Identify heavy equipment and describe practices occurring at job sites
- Collaborate with construction personnel and project managers to develop solutions while implementing permit conditions
- Record observations and notes on a Dudek platform for reporting
- Manage personal weekly workload and communicate availability for field work to project managers and project field schedulers
- Follow Dudek and construction site safety protocols
- Conduct project site visits in outdoor environments involving noise, uneven surfaces, extreme weather, moving vehicles, and equipment
- Attend in-person and virtual meetings and communicate with peers and clients
- Perform physical activities including bending, squatting, climbing ladders, lifting up to 35 lbs. unassisted or 50 lbs. in a team lift, and trekking over uneven terrain for extended periods
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of a BA/BS degree in environmental science, environmental studies, biology, or another related field OR at least 3 years of field experience in construction compliance monitoring
- Protocol-level burrowing owl surveys using the 2012 CDFW staff report protocol
- Burrow mapping on digital media (phone/iPad)
- Burrowing owl monitoring experience at various life stages
- Construction monitoring under another California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Incidental Take Permit (ITP) for any species
- Burrow avoidance, including buffer installation with support of the construction team
- Documented experience excavating BUOW burrows under a CDFW-approved Burrowing Owl Passive Relocation Plan
- Burrow blocking, including one-way-door passive relocation, completed under an ITP or approved Passive Relocation Plan
- Ability to complete construction surveys and focused resource surveys
- Reliable vehicle access
- Valid driver’s license and active personal automobile liability insurance by the first day of employment
- Protocol-level surveys, monitoring, pre-construction surveys, or handling permits for special-status listed species, including burrowing owl
- Preferred experience with California red-legged frog, San Joaquin kit fox, California tiger salamander, and large listed branchiopods
- Preferred CDFW permits (SCP or MOU) for Crotch’s bumble bee or foothill yellow-legged frog
- Species survey or monitoring experience with Crotch’s bumble bee, foothill yellow-legged frog, western pond turtle, giant garter snake, Swainson’s hawk, and/or state or federally listed species
- Experience with GPS/GIS mobile applications, including ArcField Maps, ESRI, and ArcMap
- Experience with Survey123
- Preferred experience working at least 3 years in the Northern California area in biological resources
- Previous approvals from CDFW and/or USFWS as a project-approved biological monitor or designated biologist
- Solid written and verbal communication skills
- Understanding of environmental regulations
- Highly organized and able to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Self-motivated and interested in learning and growing as a project team member
- Certifications in sediment and erosion control
- Certifications in dust monitoring
- Proficiency in noise monitoring
- Qualified biologist able to survey and monitor special-status wildlife and plant species
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check
- U.S. work authorization required
