About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide legal guidance and timely legal advice and counsel for utility matters, especially integrated resource planning
  • Advise electric management on regulatory, compliance, and business matters
  • Represent Duke Energy in administrative litigation and regulatory proceedings
  • Handle North Carolina administrative litigation concerning general energy policy issues
  • Perform complex legal research, analysis, and writing involving state and federal law
  • Research legal principles and precedents and consult with outside counsel
  • Draft and execute legal documents and gather relevant case information
  • Conduct hearings, including witness presentation and cross-examination
  • Coordinate and collaborate on regulatory matters across business areas
  • Oversee routine regulatory reporting and compliance filings
  • Address ratemaking, PURPA policy, prudence determinations, affiliate issues, tariffs, territorial assignments, regulatory accounting, and other utility matters
  • Manage regulatory proceedings, appellate cases, rulemakings, and interventions
  • Support stakeholder engagement initiatives
  • Negotiate outcomes in state regulatory proceedings

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Minimum of seven (7) or more years of experience practicing law
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina, or licensed to practice in any state in the U.S. and eligible for admission under North Carolina bar rules
  • Must live in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area
  • Ability to travel interstate to key conferences at various U.S. locations two to three times per year
  • North Carolina regulatory/agency experience preferred
  • Litigation experience preferred
  • Understanding of emerging energy issues preferred
  • Experience interacting with multiple stakeholders and collaborative groups to reach multi-party resolutions preferred
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under deadline pressure, including in fast-moving, high-stakes matters
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills
  • Broad, in-depth knowledge and experience in the energy industry
  • Knowledge of Duke Energy and its various business operations
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound judgment, strategic thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent work product and attention to detail
  • Proven effective legal research and writing skills
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
