About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide engineering and technical expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving routine fuel mechanical performance problems
  • Plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor work activities with higher-level employees or management
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches
  • Perform complex fuel rod mechanical analyses, including rod internal pressure, fuel melt, and cladding corrosion, using NRC-approved methodologies
  • Perform crud and corrosion risk analyses using industry-standard methods, tools, and software
  • Plan and support new and irradiated fuel examinations and characterization
  • Review fuel design and manufacturing process changes and approve or reject them
  • Develop fuel and core component design specifications
  • Perform core component management, lifetime analyses, and tracking
  • Ensure high-quality, conforming fuel and components are delivered to plants on time and within specifications
  • Accommodate emergent work and multitask while managing shifting priorities
  • Maintain working relationships with Nuclear Fuels Engineering, Plant Engineering, Operations, vendors, and sub-suppliers
  • Participate in technical seminars, computer code training, group training, and industry technical or strategic meetings
  • Support company goals and represent Duke Energy positively and professionally

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Must meet minimum ANSI requirements under Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011 and Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or a Master's degree in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering with a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree in another discipline from an ABET accredited program
  • Nuclear Engineer I: 0–2 years of engineering experience
  • Nuclear Engineer II: minimum of 2 years of engineering experience and minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Must live within a reasonable commute of the designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way
  • Must live within one hour of a nuclear site
  • Able to obtain nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • May be required to have Emergency Response Organization responsibilities, including callouts and on-call duty rotation
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
  • Desired: Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate and/or Professional Engineer license
  • Desired: Unix and/or Linux workstation experience
  • Desired: Computer programming experience (FORTRAN/Python/VBA/etc.)
  • Desired: Knowledge of thermal hydraulic calculations, nuclear fuel component materials, and fuel composition
  • Desired: Experience running fuel performance software tools
  • Desired: Good written and oral communication skills
