About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build and manage relationships with state and local elected and appointed officials to advance Company objectives and influence legislation, ordinances, and governmental actions
- Manage governmental, business, and community relationships within Piedmont Natural Gas Company's service territory
- Represent the Company in strategic industry, association, and chamber organizations
- Manage key stakeholder relationships and coordinate with Company departments and executives
- Monitor political climate and public policy issues affecting the Company
- Evaluate proposed ordinances, legislation, taxes, fees, facility placement, service charges, and other governmental actions
- Manage franchise agreements and facilitate business planning with municipalities and counties
- Identify, develop plans for, and resolve complex or sensitive issues affecting Piedmont
- Serve as lead negotiator, decision-maker, and often media spokesperson
- Lead stakeholder engagement concerning company, regional, industry, growth, gas service, facilities, project development, permitting, zoning, and community concerns
- Develop local philanthropic strategies and budgets using Duke Energy Foundation and community development and business enhancement funds
- Develop advocacy and education strategies for external constituencies
- Maintain working knowledge of natural gas systems and customer gas facilities and needs
- Establish communication and education channels with customers and stakeholders
- Prepare and present information about pertinent emerging issues
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Communication, Finance or another related degree and minimum seven (7) years of relevant professional experience, or High School/GED and 10 years of relevant professional experience in lieu of degree
- Minimum seven years of relevant professional experience, including at least one year of direct experience in local government and community relations within the utility industry
- Experience building and managing relationships with government, business, community, or other external stakeholders
- Ability to independently manage complex issues, exercise sound judgment, and work effectively across organizational functions
- Strong political acumen and ability to navigate dynamic state and local political environments
- Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, negotiation, and issue-resolution skills
- Strong financial and business acumen
- Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
- Ability to live within a reasonable commute, not greater than 50 miles one way, to a designated Duke Energy facility
- Ability to report to the assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed, on average 3 full workdays per regular workweek
- Travel requirement of 5–15%
