About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Plan and lead large, complex programmatic and management systems audits of EHS throughout the enterprise
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of assigned audit staff personnel
  • Evaluate the design and effectiveness of programs and processes against the Duke Energy EHS Management System and regulatory requirements
  • Conduct interviews and site observations with stakeholders from craft personnel to senior management
  • Gather and analyze data using reasoning and logic, and draw appropriate conclusions
  • Monitor and track post-audit action plans and perform follow-up procedures to validate implementation and risk mitigation
  • Prepare audit deliverables supporting conclusions
  • Communicate audit risks and issues to varying audiences
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with audit customers and management
  • Participate in annual risk assessment processes and develop the audit plan
  • Complete assigned audits, initiatives, and department projects according to prescribed milestones
  • Maintain and leverage current knowledge of EHS regulations, energy-industry matters, and leading practices

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or another environmental, health and safety related discipline
  • Five (5) or more years of related EHS work experience
  • Technical skills and advanced knowledge/experience in varied EHS fields, including environmental or safety management systems, waste management, clean air, water, industrial health, occupational safety, etc.
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Must possess all basic/required qualifications
  • Up to 35% travel
  • Desired: Certified Safety Professional, Registered Environmental Manager, BEAC Certified Professional Environmental Auditor, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and/or OSHA 500/501 trainer courses
  • Desired: Master’s degree in environmental, health and safety, business or another related discipline
  • Desired: Utilities/energy industry experience
  • Desired: Internal and/or external auditing experience
  • Desired: Resourcefulness when managing through ambiguity, including complex audit projects
  • Desired: Ability to work independently and balance multiple projects
  • Desired: Ability to identify and assess risks and impacts to develop and manage a risk-informed audit scope and approach
  • Desired: Acknowledgement of customer needs and expectations, including ability to adjust tasks accordingly to add value to the business
  • Desired: Project management and supervisory experience, including coaching skills
  • Desired: Data analytics experience
