About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop advanced automation solutions within the Power Grid Operations Distribution system
  • Develop, test, and commission planned island/microgrid automation controllers, energy storage gateways, high-speed switching edge controllers, and other non-standard projects
  • Develop and integrate project settings and configurations for non-routine automation control projects outside substations with PGO-D
  • Provide technical expertise with industrial coding, testing, and deployment
  • Support field commissioning activities and project implementation
  • Support automation device lifecycle management, including assessment and firmware management for standard updates and cybersecurity initiatives
  • Coordinate with enterprise standards, system protection, design engineering, DCC Operations, telecom, and other internal stakeholders
  • Interface with external engineering consultants
  • Provide telecom guidance for Operational Technology projects
  • Support the Control Hardware in the Loop lab for testing and development
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve increasingly complex engineering problems
  • Contribute to planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring work activities
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches
  • Complete engineering projects with minimal oversight and manage project schedules and interfaces
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Support company goals and represent Duke Energy positively and professionally

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Engineer III: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer; a Master’s degree in engineering may be considered in lieu of the bachelor’s degree
  • Engineer III: Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program is required per the Specific Requirements
  • Must be able to travel 15-25% to support field work
  • Must live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Working knowledge of SEL RTAC Programming
  • Experience developing, testing, and commissioning complex projects
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled Value (SV) protocols
  • Familiarity with Relay IEC 61131 Programming
  • Familiarity with network switch configuration, ports/interfaces requirements, VLANs, and protocol support
  • Knowledge of fiber network design, components, and integration with field assets
  • General understanding of electric system protection
  • Working knowledge of RTDS hardware and equipment integration for testing
  • Experience developing models for power system studies using CYME, ETAP, or SKM
  • Working knowledge of DSCADA, Distribution Management System, and planning tools
  • Practical experience with Maximo and Footprints
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Increasing proficiency in project management and researching engineering and design issues
