About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design new and existing transmission substations and related equipment within Duke Energy's Carolinas East Service territory
  • Produce engineering release packages, including drawings and bills of material
  • Develop project scopes, substation layouts, detailed designs, plan and section drawings, and construction plans
  • Design electrical arrangements, one-lines, structures, foundations, and other substation components
  • Analyze scenarios, evaluate options, and perform design calculations in accordance with standards, codes, and engineering practices
  • Support transmission substation routing and siting, conceptual designs, and cost estimates
  • Provide engineering expertise and guidance for complex substation design problems
  • Prepare job packages, technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and drawings
  • Conduct engineering studies and complete non-routine projects with minimal oversight
  • Independently manage project schedules and interfaces
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor project activities, quality, schedules, and budgets
  • Modify designs to address construction issues, environmental circumstances, and public concerns
  • Provide construction troubleshooting, problem resolution, oversight, and on-site support
  • Collaborate with project teams, field personnel, construction teams, and other stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate records and files and support company goals

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Engineer III: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer; a Master's degree in engineering may be considered in lieu of the bachelor's degree
  • Engineer III: Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer; a Master's degree in engineering may be considered in lieu of the bachelor's degree
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum 6 years of relevant engineering experience without state registration as a PE
  • Experience in the electric utility industry desired
  • Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering degree desired
  • Professional Engineering designation in NC or SC desired
  • Proficiency in transmission substation design theories and principles, including electro-mechanical concepts and substation structural design
  • Proficiency with substation design software and CAD tools, including AutoCAD, MicroStation, MathCAD, SAG10, WinIGS, CDEGs, RISA, and Lpile
  • Experience with asset management tools such as Maximo desired
  • Familiarity with IEEE 605, IEEE 80, NESC, NEC, and ASCE 113
  • Proficiency in engineering theories and principles
  • Proficiency in researching solutions, evaluating alternatives, making recommendations, and presenting recommendations
  • Proficiency in project management principles
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from varied socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Must live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility
  • Must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies
  • Must be able to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • 5–20% system travel required; travel requirements listed as 15–25%
