About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide engineering and technical expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving fuel mechanical performance problems
- Plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor work activities with higher-level employees or management
- Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches
- Perform complex fuel rod mechanical analyses using NRC-approved methodologies
- Perform crud and corrosion risk analyses using industry-standard methods, tools, and software
- Plan and support new and irradiated fuel examinations and characterization
- Review fuel design and manufacturing process changes and approve or reject them
- Develop fuel and core component design specifications
- Perform core component management and lifetime analyses and tracking
- Ensure conforming fuel and components are delivered to plants on time and within specifications
- Accommodate emergent work and shifting priorities while keeping management informed
- Maintain working relationships with Nuclear Fuels Engineering, Plant Engineering, Operations, vendors, and sub-suppliers
- Participate in technical training, seminars, code training, industry meetings, and strategic activities
- Support company goals and represent Duke Energy professionally
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering from an ABET accredited program (or Master's degree in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering with a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree in another discipline from an ABET accredited program)
- Nuclear Engineer III: minimum of 4 years of engineering experience and 1 year of nuclear experience
- Senior Nuclear Engineer: minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer, and 1 year of nuclear experience
- Meet minimum ANSI requirements identified within Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011 and Regulatory Guide 1.8 personnel qualifications
- Must live within a reasonable commute of a designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way
- Must live within one hour of a nuclear site
- Able to obtain nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance
- Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
- May be required to fulfill Emergency Response Organization responsibilities, including site callouts and on-call duty rotations
- Ability to work additional hours, occasional off-hour emergent work, and travel 5–20%
- Must be willing to wear required personal protective equipment
- Desired: Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Desired: Unix/Linux workstation experience
- Desired: FORTRAN, Python, or VBA programming experience
- Desired: Project management proficiency
- Desired: Electric utility industry experience
- Desired: Experience with PAD, COPERNIC, VIPRE, or BOA
- Desired: Nuclear fuel vendor manufacturing oversight, surveillance, and evaluation experience
- Desired: Knowledge of thermal hydraulic calculations, heat transfer, flow modeling, nuclear fuel component materials, and fuel composition
- Desired: Engineering/design research, alternatives evaluation, recommendations, and presentation skills
