About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support mechanical technical design and project coordination
  • Support engineering design, analysis, modification, and maintenance of structures, systems, and components at Catawba Nuclear Station
  • Specify vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and other process equipment
  • Prepare engineering change packages, specifications, calculations, and drawings addressing plant technical problems
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations
  • Support assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation activities
  • Develop or revise design specifications and technical requirements documents
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents
  • Conduct system walkdowns and provide field support for modification implementation
  • Perform independent review of peer-prepared engineering products
  • Support company goals and represent Duke Energy positively and professionally

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or state registration as a Professional Engineer for the Senior Engineer level
  • A Master's degree in engineering may be considered in lieu of the bachelor's engineering degree
  • Minimum 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
  • Minimum 4 years of engineering experience for Nuclear Engineer III
  • Minimum 6 years of engineering experience for Senior Nuclear Engineer, or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Meet minimum ANSI requirements under Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011 and Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Must be able to work within a reasonable commute of the designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way
  • Must report onsite an average of 2 full workdays per regular work week as required and directed by the manager
  • Able to fulfill potential Emergency Response Organization responsibilities, including callouts and on-call duty rotation
  • Fit for Duty when required for on-call responsibilities
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment as needed
  • Additional hours as workload/business need requires
  • Occasional overnight travel
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Preferred: Understanding of thermodynamics and hydraulic fundamentals
  • Preferred: Project management principles
  • Preferred: Utility industry experience
  • Preferred: State registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Preferred: Nuclear industry standard design process experience
  • Preferred: 3–6 years related work experience within a utility company or EPC firm
  • Preferred: ASME Code knowledge for pressure vessels and piping systems
  • Preferred: Background in heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and rotating equipment
