About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage engineering work in protection and control specialization with minimal supervision
  • Design protection and control relaying applications for new and existing substations
  • Manage multiple engineering projects and ensure timely release of designs
  • Use design specifications, code manuals, CAD software, and reference sources to complete engineering designs
  • Produce engineering release packages with drawings and bills of material
  • Develop project scopes and control equipment enclosure layouts
  • Prepare elementary, schematic, and wiring diagram drawings and construction plans
  • Develop and review high-voltage substation designs from 13kV through 500kV
  • Develop expertise in protective relay settings calculations and analysis using IEEE, NERC, and evolving standards
  • Provide construction support to field personnel during project implementation
  • Maintain CAD expertise for efficient engineering work
  • Collaborate with project teams and share knowledge
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches
  • Conduct engineering and related studies
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Support company goals and represent the company professionally

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Engineer III: 4 years minimum required related experience
  • Senior Engineer: 6 years minimum required related experience
  • Senior Engineer: Professional Engineer Certifications/License
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam preferred
  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management
  • Experience in the utility industry preferred
  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department preferred
  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles
  • Increasingly proficient in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and presenting recommendations
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Must live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility
  • Must be able to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Must be available for system travel, call-out, and work during system emergencies or scheduled days off
