About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own architectural decisions for the workflow runtime, single- versus multi-tenancy boundaries, and integration patterns
  • Write design documents, defend designs in review, and ship implementations
  • Deliver end to end from requirements through design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and post-incident learning
  • Partner with Product, DevOps, and engineering teams on cross-team initiatives, including Celery-to-Temporal.io rollout, customer onboarding to new regions, and workflow-runtime breaking changes
  • Mentor mid-level engineers through code review, design review, and on-call shadowing
  • Continuously improve code quality, system stability, and test coverage

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years building production backend systems, including at least 2 years owning a distributed/async runtime (workflow engine, task queue, event-driven system, stream processor—Temporal.io, Celery, Kafka Streams, AWS Step Functions, or equivalent)
  • Deep hands-on Python, plus working JavaScript
  • Production-scale experience and mindset, including throughput, tail latency, and blast-radius constraints
  • Production experience operating self-hosted infrastructure on Kubernetes; EKS preferred
  • Comfortable reading Helm charts, debugging pod resource issues, and reasoning about autoscaling
  • Comfortable with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and being on-call for systems shipped
  • Experience using Claude Code or an equivalent agentic coding tool for real SDLC work
  • Experience shipping LLM-backed features in production, including agentic workflows, retrieval, tool use, structured output, evaluation loops, and consideration of latency, cost, and safety
  • Strongly preferred: direct production experience with Temporal.io
  • Strongly preferred: grasp of distributed-systems failure modes, including idempotency, retries, timeouts, partial failures, non-determinism, and exactly-once versus at-least-once semantics
  • Strongly preferred: Python performance optimization at the deserialization/interpreter/JIT layer
  • Strongly preferred: modern self-hosted infrastructure at scale, including multi-cluster EKS, Prometheus/Grafana, centralized log aggregation, IaC, and GitOps workflows
