About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide direct and indirect patient care within the Medical Assisting scope of practice
- Collect and document patient chief complaints and vital signs
- Document patient and family needs and participate in care planning and implementation
- Administer ordered medications
- Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems appropriately
- Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physicians
- Float permanently to urgent care centers within the market as directed by leadership
- Travel to other facilities or adjust hours to meet patient-care needs
- Maintain clean, orderly, safe examination rooms, equipment, and work areas
- Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, preparation, troubleshooting, and medication review
- Document accurately in EMR/EHR systems
- Manage provider-directed in-basket messages
- Perform front-desk workflows including registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out
- Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits; collect co-pays
- Order supplies and track referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests
- Dispose of contaminated supplies
- Participate in ongoing training
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School/GED (required)
- Active Medical Assisting certification from an approved certifying organization (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire and required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina)
- In South Carolina, completion of an approved medical assisting or qualifying health sciences/training program is required
- Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred)
- 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to collaboratively work with patients, families, and teams within a high-volume environment
