About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead the Capability squad while remaining hands-on with coding, code review, and difficult technical problems
Own shared foundations of ECA’s multi-tenant B2B SaaS platform
Own identity and access management, including authentication, SSO, roles, permissions, and Keycloak
Own tenant isolation and multi-tenant data architecture
Build and maintain platform services and integrations used by other squads
Drive performance, scalability, resilience, security, and observability across the platform
Lead, mentor, and grow developers
Define and implement non-functional requirements including performance budgets, availability, security, auditability, operability, and cost
Design and build scalable, maintainable, and secure back-end services and APIs
Set technical direction for platform foundations and engineering standards
Collaborate with Product, Delivery, and other squad leads on cross-team technical solutions
Provide realistic estimates and challenge optimistic estimates
Unblock difficult or stalled work and restore delivery momentum
Improve testing through TDD, automated testing, and load and performance testing
Ensure systems are observable and supportable in production
Help run incident response and post-incident learning
Use AI throughout the software development lifecycle
Shape safe AI coding-agent usage, including guardrails, review standards, and governance

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong back-end bias
Strong hands-on experience with Node.js, TypeScript, SQL (ideally PostgreSQL), API design, and cloud-hosted distributed systems
Understanding of running a multi-tenant SaaS platform in production
Ability to explain trade-offs between tenancy models
Experience designing for horizontal scale
Ability to reason about failure modes
Knowledge of caching, queuing, and asynchronous processing trade-offs
Experience defining, measuring, and improving latency, throughput, availability, and security posture
Knowledge of logging, metrics, and tracing
Identity and access management experience including SSO, OIDC, SAML, OAuth, authentication and authorisation, RBAC, tenant isolation, and tools such as Keycloak
Technical leadership and architectural decision-making ability
Eligible to work in the UK
AWS (ECS/EKS, Aurora), Terraform, GraphQL, event-driven or workflow-orchestration patterns, observability tooling, React, .NET Core or C# are advantageous
Experience building or hardening authentication and authorisation for a SaaS product with enterprise customers is advantageous
Experience with AI IDEs, coding agents, or AI-assisted development is advantageous
