About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the complete muon beam pathway from converter to scanned object
- Manage capture efficiency, transport dynamics, and comprehensive radiation shielding
- Design muon capture and controllable transport systems, extending current setups such as the 35° tunnel bend toward future laser-plasma-accelerator-based muon sources
- Construct integrated beamline shielding models and optimize the trade-off between background noise reduction and muon signal preservation
- Use fast-model approximations to avoid full simulation runs during every iteration
- Build and benchmark agile simulation tools for rapid beamline optimization
- Apply simulation tools across current experimental beamlines and next-generation architectures
- Optimize collection and transport optics for polychromatic beams
- Evaluate permanent magnets versus electromagnets based on field strength, demagnetization risks, cost, supply-chain reliability, and tunability
- Lead magnet procurement processes
- Ensure long-term radiation resilience of beamline components and magnetic infrastructure
- Collaborate at global research facilities and partner installations through occasional international travel
Requirements
What you’ll need- Doctorate (PhD / Dr.) in accelerator physics, particle physics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related technical field is strictly required
- Minimum post-doctoral experience required
- Several years of dedicated post-doctoral research background strongly preferred
- Complete fluency in GEANT4
- Proven particle transport simulation and validation experience
- Deep expertise in shielding and background physics, including gammas, positrons/electrons, and neutrons
- Hands-on beam optics experience for polychromatic beams and constrained spatial geometries
- Demonstrated skill in developing fast simulation models
- Sound understanding of radiation-aware magnet engineering and mitigation of magnetic degradation
- At least full professional proficiency in English
- Ability to start in January 2027 or, at the latest, February 2027
- Open to occasional international travel to global research facilities and partner installations
- Proactive, analytical approach to challenging design assumptions and validating models against realistic beam conditions
- Ownership mindset regarding hardware procurement and supply-chain realities
- Adaptability to rapid prototyping, hands-on experimentation, and tight iteration loops
- German or Estonian language ability is a valuable plus, not required
