About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build data-intensive new Elasticsearch features and fix bugs
  • Research and implement suitable data structures and algorithms
  • Work close to the operating system and hardware when needed
  • Collaborate with globally distributed engineers on search and ES|QL analytics capabilities
  • Work with UI teams to ensure a good user experience
  • Work with teams building solutions on top of Elasticsearch APIs
  • Become an expert in several Elasticsearch areas and improve them
  • Collaborate with worldwide community members on issues and pull requests, including triage and resolution
  • Write idiomatic modern Java
  • Contribute full-time to Elasticsearch while improving code clarity

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong skills in core Java, including standard-library data structures and concurrency constructs and newer features such as lambdas
  • Experience with software systems engineering
  • Strong desire to optimize and use efficient data structures and algorithms
  • Ability to work autonomously and guide projects from beginning to end, including technical design and collaboration with engineers
  • Experience developing collaboratively and exchanging feedback on code, approaches, and APIs
  • Experience with data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while owning final outcomes
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and transition between projects, codebases, or teams based on business priorities
  • Ability to drive decisions and results in a distributed team through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication
  • Bonus: Experience with Elasticsearch
  • Bonus: Experience in search and information retrieval and familiarity with related data structures and algorithms
  • Bonus: Experience with data storage technology or building data analytics capabilities
