About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and grow the data science team, setting objectives, managing performance, and developing team members
  • Hire the next data scientists and own the hiring process end to end
  • Build the data collection foundation for future compliance systems
  • Own model governance, including inventory, tiering, validation, testing evidence, drift monitoring, threshold breaches, reviews, and remediation
  • Lead Elliptic’s data science work by framing research questions, running experiments, and making recommendations
  • Write code, review methodology, and make important technical decisions
  • Own existing work on clustering, attribution, heuristics, and labelling
  • Partner with Intelligence Collection, Collection Engineering, Research and Investigations, the Chief Scientist, Product, and Engineering
  • Set standards for AI use, verification, and team workflows
  • Deliver a scalable collection plan, compliance-system recommendations, a data science hire, governance in good standing, agreed objectives, improved output reliability or throughput, and technical credibility within the first six months

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • AI fluency essential; ability to demonstrate use and critical evaluation of AI tools in data science workflows
  • Demonstrated experience managing data scientists or machine learning engineers
  • Experience hiring into a technical team and defining the hiring bar
  • Deep, hands-on data science and machine learning capability
  • Strong Python and SQL skills
  • Ability to interrogate large behavioural or transactional datasets and defend methodology
  • Track record of taking ambiguous questions to delivered datasets, models, or capabilities
  • Experience with a modern data stack including a cloud data lake, Spark or Databricks, and AWS
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Based in Washington, D.C. or willing to relocate there
  • US citizenship
  • Bonus: agentic systems, LLM agents, or autonomous transaction flows experience
