About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Develop expert understanding of identity and non-identity signals for characterising complex on-chain threats
- Lead end-to-end research and investigations from scoping and data collection through written outputs
- Present findings to clients, partners, and internal stakeholders
- Evaluate attribution coverage and lead intelligence-collection prioritisation projects
- Identify material intelligence gaps and drive remediation
- Develop processes and tooling for analysts and data scientists contributing to heuristic development
- Establish documentation standards, peer-review processes, and monitoring for drift or degradation
- Track cryptocurrency evolution, criminal typologies, and emerging obfuscation techniques
- Translate research into actionable intelligence priorities
- Produce reports, briefings, and marketing content tailored to target audiences
- Collaborate with the Principal Cryptocurrency Intelligence Scientist and Professional Services team
- Build internal and external relationships in the blockchain intelligence and financial crime research community
- Coach and mentor junior colleagues
- Establish familiarity with Elliptic's intelligence dataset and attribution methodology
- Produce a documented assessment of coverage gaps and prioritised remediation roadmap within six months
- Lead or significantly contribute to an end-to-end research or investigation project
- Propose improvements to data-scientist contributions to heuristic development
- Build cross-functional relationships and identify opportunities to translate intelligence work into product or client value
Requirements
What you’ll need- Deep, active personal interest in cryptocurrency, including protocols, ecosystems, and criminal typologies
- Data science skills for exploring new domains and solving unestablished problems
- Familiarity with OSINT techniques and rigorous attention to bias
- Ability to mentor and collaborate across functional areas
- Strong understanding of data science fundamentals
- Working knowledge of SQL and Python sufficient to independently conduct and automate analytical workflows
- Expert, demonstrable proficiency across a variety of blockchains, including layer 1 and layer 2 networks
- Direct personal experience bridging cryptocurrency between chains and self-custodying cryptocurrency
- Competency as an intelligence professional, including cognitive-bias awareness, structured analytic techniques, and communicating uncertainty
- Excellent communication skills for technical and executive audiences
- Previous experience holding, or ability to obtain, security clearance in the UK or US
- AI fluency; ability to apply AI tools and approaches to intelligence-analysis workflows
- Relevant postgraduate qualification in a technical or intelligence-adjacent discipline is a bonus
- Experience in a formal intelligence setting is a bonus
- Commercial or research cryptocurrency experience, including complex transaction tracing, demixing, and cross-chain attribution, is a bonus
- Experience with public-sector entities is a bonus
- Familiarity with threat typologies such as thefts, scams, ransomware, nation-state activity, terrorism financing, and sanctions evasion is a bonus
