About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead research and quantitative analysis on electricity policies, regulations, technologies, and market structures
  • Shape the Electricity team’s research agenda and identify high-impact research questions and policy opportunities
  • Lead large research projects from scoping and methodology through analysis, writing, and publication
  • Develop analytical approaches and translate electricity-sector data into actionable recommendations
  • Review methodologies, assumptions, data sources, findings, and data visualizations to ensure analytical rigor
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on electricity policy
  • Develop policy recommendations concerning electricity markets, utility regulation, transmission, grid infrastructure, clean energy deployment, interconnection, permitting, and land use
  • Analyze complex policy and regulatory questions across geographies, market structures, and regulatory frameworks
  • Monitor emerging research, technologies, market developments, regulatory proceedings, and state and federal electricity policy
  • Contribute electricity-sector expertise to cross-cutting projects
  • Produce reports, research papers, memos, articles, presentations, and other written and visual products
  • Cultivate relationships with policymakers, regulators, utilities, grid operators, industry leaders, NGOs, researchers, and other stakeholders
  • Lead stakeholder engagement and represent Energy Innovation at meetings, panels, conferences, and public forums
  • Serve as a spokesperson on electricity-sector issues and respond to media inquiries
  • Manage multiple complex projects, including objectives, workplans, timelines, responsibilities, and deliverables
  • Drive projects independently from scoping through completion and communicate progress, risks, and resource needs
  • Coordinate internal and external contributors to deliver high-quality work on time
  • Serve as the primary contact for project partners and stakeholders
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to colleagues and potentially supervise staff
  • Energy Innovation researches and analyzes low-carbon energy policy options and works with clients to inform philanthropic investments in technology and advocacy

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • At least 8+ years of experience in energy and climate policy analysis or related fields
  • Significant experience conducting technical research and interpreting legislation, regulations, regulatory proceedings, or electricity market rules
  • Strong understanding of scientific and technical subject matter relating to electricity systems, clean energy technologies, greenhouse gas emissions mitigation strategies, and policy design
  • Strong knowledge of electricity-sector technologies, electricity markets, utility business models, and regulatory structures
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and communicating complex technical and policy subjects for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including data visualization
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Excel for data analysis
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including independently leading multiple complex research or policy projects and coordinating contributors
  • Knowledge of U.S. or international politics and policymaking related to climate and clean energy
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to independently prioritize and advance work in a fast-paced, evolving, collaborative environment
  • Self-motivated and entrepreneurial ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Willingness to travel up to 15%
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
