About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform admitting duties for all patients receiving hospital services
  • Assign accurate medical record numbers (MRNs)
  • Complete medical necessity and compliance checks
  • Provide patient instructions and collect insurance information
  • Receive and process physician orders using an overlay tool
  • Provide excellent customer service and serve as the department SMART
  • Operate the telephone switchboard
  • Use quality auditing and reporting systems to correct accounts
  • Develop training materials and programs for new hires
  • Provide continuing education to revenue cycle associates
  • Develop patient access department staff schedules
  • Provide on-call and after-hours support, including unscheduled coverage when needed
  • Collect point-of-service payments and offer payment plan options
  • Conduct account audits and provide statistical data to Patient Access Leadership
  • Explain consent and patient education forms, obtain signatures, and document required information
  • Review insurance eligibility responses, select insurance plan codes, and enter benefit data
  • Pre-register patient accounts and make inbound and outbound calls to obtain patient information
  • Screen Medicare medical necessity using ABN software and distribute required forms

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 1 to 3 years in a similar role
  • Understanding of revenue cycle including admission, billing, payments, and denials
  • Comprehensive knowledge of patient insurance processes for obtaining authorizations and benefits verification
  • Knowledge of health insurance requirements
  • Knowledge of medical terminology or CPT or procedure codes
  • Associate degree or equivalent experience
  • Must reside and be authorized to work within the United States
  • Ability to work on-site at MWHC - Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia
