About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own Epoch’s portfolio of AI automations, keeping production systems running, fixing failures, and retiring low-value automations
Build automations for operations, communications, and research support
Understand colleagues’ needs and involve them in testing and refining automations
Prioritize projects by estimating their organizational value
Run shared AI tools, including Claude in Slack, integrations, shared skills, and prompts
Review new AI tools and models and recommend worthwhile adoptions
Oversee AI tool spending
Run AI onboarding for new hires
Write practical AI guidance and provide one-to-one support
Maintain welcoming AI support channels
Document automations for handover and maintenance
Ensure Epoch controls dependent accounts and access
Maintain the automations dashboard
Report regularly on workflow changes, users affected, and improvements achieved
Report to the COO
Help researchers and operations staff use frontier models more effectively
Epoch AI researches machine-learning trends and AI’s economic consequences, producing publicly accessible knowledge for policymakers, industry leaders, and society

Requirements

What you’ll need

Extensive practical experience with AI
Experience using coding agents to turn ideas into working tools and take projects from initial problem to deployment
Ability to translate needs into clear specifications and break work into manageable tasks
Understanding of system design trade-offs and how resulting systems fit together
Product judgment focused on user needs, interaction design, edge cases, usability, and scope
Resourcefulness and adaptability when solving unfamiliar problems
Aptitude for teaching and coaching
Ability to set priorities and follow through autonomously and reliably
Understanding of and alignment with Epoch’s mission
Professional-level English proficiency
Application materials must be submitted in English
Willingness to attend 3 in-person retreats each year
A background in software engineering is not required
