About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage and/or administer complex delinquent and problem commercial mortgages, generally loans exceeding $2.5MM
  • Minimize losses to the Bank and process loans for legal action related to non-payment
  • Conduct full financial reviews before recommending legal remedies to Senior Management
  • Manage legal-action loans and enforce remedies and conditions as warranted
  • Implement default and workout strategies in a timely and efficient manner
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to determine and negotiate successful workout strategies
  • Perform, review, and correlate underwriting for defaulted loans and problem accounts, including collateral analysis and valuation
  • Address heightened risk elements and ensure risk ratings on default loans are updated and reported
  • Work with Mortgage Services to manage, monitor, and resolve commercial delinquencies and non-performing default loans
  • Provide timely updates to Senior Management
  • Assist with oversight of Bank-held properties for recovery purposes
  • Prepare reports for Senior Management, the Board of Directors, and external regulators, including problem loan, classified and watchlist, arrears monitoring, provisioning, and loan monitoring reports
  • Support operational efficiency initiatives, policies, procedures, and ad hoc projects
  • Manage commercial default files and problem accounts while adhering to underwriting standards, company policies, procedures, and AML requirements
  • Enforce mortgage contract conditions and develop workout strategies to avoid legal action where feasible
  • Act as a primary contact for legal counsel, real estate agents, brokers, partners, and internal departments
  • Provide support to the Associate Director, Special Loans and Restructuring
  • Complete underwriting, credit analysis, portfolio management and monitoring, reporting, projects, administrative duties, and site inspections

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of commercial mortgage experience or related, with previous default experience preferred
  • Business degree or related discipline, and/or a CPA or similar professional designation or equivalent work experience
  • Understanding of mortgage enforcement remedies and foreclosures across Canada
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Sound technical knowledge of secured lending and factors affecting the commercial mortgage market
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end commercial mortgage processes
  • Established time management and organizational skills
  • Strong multitasking skills and attention to detail under tight timelines
  • Ability to thrive in a constantly changing, high-intensity environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective negotiation and oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate professionally with Senior Management and stakeholders
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to travel within the provinces, including occasional overnight travel
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and credit check
