About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work with software engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers to set the technical direction of Etsy’s recommendation system
  • Apply machine learning advances to improve buyer and seller experiences
  • Build user models to understand buyers’ interests, tastes, and shopping missions
  • Develop personalized ranking, multi-objective optimization, and diversity-constraint models
  • Design foresight and intent prediction models for future buyer needs and lifecycle transitions
  • Improve feed reactivity and freshness based on user actions, trends, and seasonal shifts
  • Prototype, optimize, and productionize large-scale machine learning models
  • Conduct experiments, including A/B testing, to validate ML models and pipelines
  • Report to the Engineering Manager
  • Perform additional duties as assigned and adapt responsibilities as business needs change

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Successful track record applying machine learning techniques to real-world problems
  • Experience in deep learning, multi-modal learning, reinforcement learning, or similar fields
  • Hands-on experience training, deploying, monitoring, debugging, and iterating on production machine learning systems in search, recommendation, and/or ads systems
  • Production experience developing large-scale machine learning systems in Python, Scala, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar languages
  • Ability to write understandable and testable code
  • Ability to write and manipulate data at large scale
  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related engineering fields
  • At least two years of practical machine learning experience
  • Ability to work within the role's stated hybrid arrangement and attend the Brooklyn office once or twice per week when within commuting distance
