About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, build, and maintain search backend systems and infrastructure
- Partner with ML modeling teams to productionalize retrieval and ranking models at scale
- Ensure reliable data pipelines, index health, and performance
- Develop indexing, query execution, and ranking infrastructure to improve latency, throughput, and resilience
- Own and operate next-generation retrieval infrastructure and search backends
- Unify lexical and ANN retrieval infrastructure across Etsy products
- Enable ML-based rankers in retrieval
- Build and maintain scalable, low-latency systems meeting strict SLAs and supporting live A/B experiments
- Collaborate with applied scientists, Data Platform, ML Enablement, Search ML, and product engineering teams
- Use AI tools and develop agentic workflows to improve individual and team velocity and developer experience
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, mentorship, and performance feedback
- Report to the Engineering Manager
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience building and shipping production ML systems, ideally in real-time search, recommendation, or ads systems
- Strong engineering and coding skills
- Proficiency in Python, Scala, Java, and/or equivalent languages
- Experience with system performance optimization, caching strategies, and scaling high-throughput, low-latency services
- Ability to write reliable, well-tested, maintainable production code
- Hands-on experience with AI and agentic frameworks, including designing and building agentic workflows
- Familiarity with modern retrieval and ranking techniques, including neural retrieval, semantic search, and transformer-based models is a plus
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively
- Ability to work within commutable distance of Etsy’s Dublin office, or travel occasionally to the office if remote outside commuting distance
