About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Architect Collage, Etsy’s design system, including component anatomy, API and composition models, variant strategies, and token structures
- Make design system decisions across web, iOS, Android, and Flutter
- Define and refine component proposal, prioritization, design, documentation, graduation, and deprecation processes
- Structure tokens, component metadata, and documentation for programmatic operation and scalable quality
- Use agentic tools such as Cursor or Claude to prototype architecture and reduce manual work
- Document decisions and involve the team in unresolved architecture problems
- Partner with teams consuming Collage to identify failures, resolve root causes, and drive adoption
- Collaborate with web and native engineering leads on implementable, token-backed, performant designs
- Champion accessibility, precision, completeness, and quality across system outputs
- Lead cross-squad design objectives and connect them to UX Platform strategy
- Help designers adapt work to existing patterns and platform conventions
- Build prototypes to clarify direction and create organizational alignment
- Influence priorities and roadmaps while balancing near-term delivery and long-term system vision
- Evolve team workflows, intake processes, and documentation practices
Requirements
What you’ll need- Portfolio showing design systems work at scale, including component architecture, token systems, and delivery across web, iOS, and Android
- Experience making deliberate choices between cross-platform coherence and platform conventions
- Judgment about opinionated versus flexible design systems
- Understanding of coded mediums and infrastructure
- Experience with agentic tools such as Cursor or Claude
- Ability to read component implementations and discuss build constraints with engineers
- Strong visual craft and rigorous understanding of typography, color, space, and density
- Accessibility standards integrated into design decisions
- Ability to operate in ambiguity and frame poorly defined problems
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills
- Ability to lead cross-squad design objectives and provide strategic leadership
- Ability to set visual and interaction standards across multiple surfaces and platforms
