About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Develop AI-based methods for onboard SAR data processing close to the sensing level
- Enable real-time information extraction, event detection, autonomous re-tasking, and cooperative multi-sensor operations for next-generation Earth observation missions
- Undertake advanced research using AI, ML, disruptive computing, and related technologies
- Develop prototypes for onboard SAR data processing, cognitive SAR, and onboard SAR for 3CS systems
- Explore innovative methodologies and technologies
- Develop novel methods, technology implementations, ML models, and high-level products
- Contribute to open datasets and tools for AI applications and research
- Support rapid prototyping activities, research sprints, and open challenges
- Engage with the innovation ecosystem and promote uptake of new techniques
- Publish research outcomes in high-impact journals
- Drive collaboration within the Φ-lab community and ESA internal teams
- Contribute to Φ-lab strategy, activities, and outreach on disruptive technologies for Earth observation
- Maintain dialogue with the scientific community and international programmes
- Support Φ-lab daily activities and research networks
- Collaborate with the Φ-lab and avionics and EEE Division to identify, test, and benchmark edge-computing hardware
- Conduct research and implement onboard AI prototypes for SAR
- Support external R&D activities related to onboard AI for SAR
Requirements
What you’ll need- Recently completed within the past five years, or close to completion of, a PhD in a relevant field such as data science, AI, computer science, remote sensing, machine learning, electronics, embedded systems, aerospace engineering, Earth system science, or climate
- Thesis subject relevant to the tasks outlined in the posting
- Sound knowledge of EO, AI, ML, and related technologies
- Knowledge of SAR signal processing and algorithms relevant to the research field
- Experience with one or more general-purpose programming languages, such as Python
- Experience with general-purpose deep learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
- Interest and ability to share knowledge with other ESA organisational units
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment, independently and as part of a team
- Good knowledge of English or French required
- Applicants must be nationals of an eligible ESA Member, Associate Member, Cooperating State, or European Cooperating State
- Basic screening and possible selection tests may be required
- Research proposal of no more than five pages required
- Asset: knowledge of onboard AI and edge computing for SAR systems
- Asset: experience with edge-computing hardware such as FPGAs, TPUs, VPUs, and GPUs
- Asset: knowledge of another Member State language
