About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Identify distribution system problems involving multiple feeders and substations
- Lead and conduct scenario-based planning studies, evaluate alternatives, and recommend reliable distribution system solutions
- Develop medium-range (2–5 year) and long-range (5+ year) distribution plans covering load relief, capacity, asset-related issues, and large DER integration
- Build, maintain, and validate electrical distribution models, including low-voltage meshed network components and secondary distribution topologies
- Collaborate with cross-functional groups on long-range planning criteria for integrating two-way communication technologies, including PV, EVs, and battery storage
- Prepare N-1 and N-2 contingency studies for distribution networks
- Propose new distribution substations and associated overhead and underground feeders
- Perform area-wide voltage and power-factor studies and recommend findings to distribution engineering and operations
- Lead or conduct load forecast studies for distribution planning
- Partner with Distribution Engineering, Asset Management, Standards, Transmission/Substation Engineering, and other departments on economic analyses and cost allocation
- Recommend project priorities for the capital construction program financial review
- Conduct or manage studies supporting facility needs, alternatives evaluation, and preferred solutions in regulatory applications, reports, chapters, and testimony
- Prepare distribution documentation and testimony for regulatory filings
- Communicate with and support distribution customers regarding proposed facilities
- Provide leadership and guidance to engineers while coordinating multiple cross-functional groups
- Present recommendations and results to management at all levels
- Represent the department and company on committees
- Recommend development or changes to distribution planning criteria and standards
- Respond to emergency restoration assignments outside normal responsibilities, work hours, and location when required
Requirements
What you’ll need- Mastery of subject matter with extensive experience planning distribution substation facilities, distribution lines, and underground network systems in an electric power system
- Working knowledge of electric simulation software models and power distribution systems analysis, including load-flow, transient, and 8760-hours simulation
- Hands-on experience running electrical simulations in Synergi Electric, CYME, or equivalent power system simulation programs
- Knowledge of photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery storage technologies
- Knowledge of techniques for planning expansion of distribution lines and distribution substation facilities
- Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system
- Advanced knowledge of distribution line design and operating practices
- Knowledge of National, State, and other planning standards
- Good written and oral communication skills, including formal presentation
- Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to develop strategic partnerships
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; Electric Power Systems preferred
- Registered Professional Engineer in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or New Hampshire is desirable
- Minimum of five (5) years related experience in planning, design, and operations related to distribution lines, distribution substation facilities, and underground network systems
- Must be available for emergency restoration assignments as required
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary
